Making Money Off Youtube

I'm seeing this sort of pitch a lot lately:

"We are the next such-and-such company" or "we take such-and-such company concept to the next level" or "unlike [insert billion dollar website name here], we have added a killer feature and thing-a-ma-jig that changes the game."

Fill in the blanks with the buzz words of the moment and I'm sure you'll get the idea. Why the sudden urge to jump into certain markets rather than others? Well, call me crazy, but for many an amateur, I believe it might have to do something with dollar signs in the press. (Let's just say $50 billion for the sake of example.)

What disturbs me about this trend is the sheer number of people that are concentrating on web companies built for "investment dollars" or "ad revenue" rather than built for immediate income-generation. Sure, Web start-ups are inexpensive to launch, but I still contend that to stay in business they must earn money. Not every website is going to get an investor onboard or a strategic acquirer interested—not by a long shot—and you have to at least afford Ramen noodles to sustain yourself.

When I partnered with a fledging start-up to help build a Web 2.0 company back in the early 2000s, I quickly fell victim to a lot of this same hype nonsense. Except at that time, it wasn't "social networking", it was video sharing. YouTube had just started to come about and I wanted in the game. Like every other Web start-up in that space at the time, we too were "revolutionary" and a "game-changer."

Only problem: we had no immediate revenue model, based our financial forecasts totally on sponsor and ad revenue, and could not keep up with the site traffic. Investors wouldn't touch us because we were still too small, yet expenses kept piling up. In the end, the company folded and tons of money was lost (and probably is still being paid off the original founders' credit cards today.)

I certainly don't want to discourage the brilliant Web engineers out there whose business models are sound; however, I do want to discourage the other people out there (yes, you know who you are) from jumping on the "$900 million bandwagon" simply because you think your idea is better, cooler, or has more features than a site that already exists. In fact, if you have the word revolutionary in your pitch, just go ahead and wipe hard-drive clean right now.

Think before you code. Just because you can build something, doesn't mean you should. Time is your most valuable asset and you want to make sure that the enterprise you are committing yourself to has a real chance of providing you with sustainable revenue. You must truly understand how your business will make real money before you bank on some unrealistic expectations concerning traffic. If you are making money, the potential to raise investment dollars becomes all the more real.

Remember, it is never a smart bet to try to build an "acquisition" rather than build a business. After all, if your business cannot survive on it's own you'll need to exit the company way before any exit strategy can even occur—because you'll be bankrupt.

Silicon Prairie News gives its start-up community a voice

You’ve heard of Silicon Valley, and likely Silicon Alley, but have you heard of Silicon Prairie?

Silicon Prairie is geographically hard to define but it’s there– somewhere between Chicago and Colorado, Dallas and the Dakotas–and it’s getting noticed because of one local news source The Silicon Prairie News.

And the Prairie’s entrepreneurs can thank one man, a native Nebraskan named Jeff Slobotski, who decided he wanted to write about the tech sector. After a few days of writing about California’s burgeoning scene, he decided to refocus his efforts on his own community. Recalling the words of my college professor, if you’re going to be a writer, write about what you know.

Slobotski decided to give his community a voice and that voice goes by the name of Silicon Prairie News. He called on the skills of his then friend, now CTO and co-founder Dusty Davidson, who runs BrightMix, a small, local software company.  In July 2008, Slobotski started blogging as a hobby, interviewing local entrepreneurs on his lunch breaks and publishing stories at night.

In June 2009, Slobotski took on Danny Schreiber full time as SPN’s Managing Editor. Schreiber’s favorite players in the SP scene? Dwolla, a mobile payments service that is giving PayPal a run for its money and RockDex, a start up that is capturing the social metrics of plays on YouTube, LastFM and MySpace for musicians.

The boys had a lot to write about, they just needed people to listen. Slobotski, Davidson and Schreiber decided to throw an event to grab the world’s attention; they called it Big Omaha.

Last year’s Big Omaha was a success with over 550 people from 20 states including Foursquare’s Dennis Crowley, Charity: Water‘s Scott Harrison and Zappo’s Tony Hsieh. SPN was suddenly profitable, making money off of sponsorships and ticket sales from the event. Soon they had local businesses and Omaha’s Chamber of Commerce knocking on their door, asking if they could advertise on SPN. The readers came.

SPN currently has 4 full-time employees, 12 freelance writers and 3600 RSS feed email subscribers. At the end of November, the site averaged 25,000 unique visitors, 45,000 page views, and was growing at 10% a month.

“If it weren’t for Silicon Prairie News, there wouldn’t be a start-up scene in the mid-west. They are our voice. Their existence reinforces our culture.” says Ben Milne, the CEO of Dwolla.

Monday through Friday, expect fresh, daily content focusing on Silicon Prairie entrepreneurs like Dwolla and Hudl, an online coaching application, recently named by Inc. magazine’s 30 under 30. On the weekends, to keep traffic flowing, they’ll repurpose TED Talks or big interviews from other more well-known tech blogs.

“Our first goal is to highlight the story, the angel investors and the entrepreneurs. Our second goal is to tighten, build and connect the community and ecosystem here,” says Slobotski. “There’s value in what we’re doing by reporting on it but our events build communities that get people talking and brainstorming ideas together.”

The overall scene in Silicon Prairie is comprised of a lot of consumer related tech starts up. With the large amount of capital potentially available (read: Berkshire Hathaway and everyone else who is connected to Warren Buffet by one string or another), the scene could be well funded with the right connections.

This coming week, they will launch Silicon Prairie News’ Kansas City bureau, of which Kansan Royce Haynes will be involved. Haynes, like many SPN readers found the site through hearing about Big Omaha on Twitter. “I didn’t expect something of this caliber to take place in Omaha, Nebraska,” he says, “It’s going to be great to now be a part of it and to able to highlight all of the entrepreneurial activity going on in Kansas City.”

Interested in getting in on the Silicon Prairie fun? Save the date for a sweet SPN party Sunday night at SXSWi in March and a Big Omaha style event in Des Moines, Iowa this fall.

Secrets to Making Money

Deadline confirms the deal with Universal but isn’t able to say whether Julian Assange will participate in the film. Regardless, the movie could be a firebrand that surpasses the interest generated by Mr. Gibney’s last few films.

Julian Assange, the founder of the whistleblower organization WikiLeaks and therefore responsible for the release of thousands of confidential government documents, is a figure that people tend to either love or hate. To some he’s a hero and a champion of free speech and democracy; others see him as an enemy and someone who endangers our freedom by compromising the inner workings of government. (And there are probably many who see him as a troublesome, egocentric kid.)

All that being the case I’d say that Alex Gibney is the perfect man for this job, and I’m eagerly awaiting the results of his work.

In addition, producers at Josephson Entertainment and Michelle Krumm Prods have optioned Andrew Fowler‘s forthoming biography of Mr. Assange, called The Most Dangerous Man in the World. They plan a ‘suspenceful drama thriller’ based on the bio. The book follows the WikiLeaks founder from childhood to the present day. Producers compare the story they want to tell to All the President’s Men.

No word on a screenwriter, director or cast for the biopic at this point. Too bad Steven Soderbergh likely won’t have any interest in this; he’d be great for it. [Variety]

Facebook finally put out a press release on PR Newswire officially setting the record straight on $1.5 billion in funding. The overseas clientele of Goldman Sachs bought $1 billion, and the bank plus Digital Sky Technologies together invested another $500 million.

The blogosphere will doubtlessly explode with posts about why and how the numbers seem to have changed from what was originally reported by The New York Times on January 2. I don’t think the size of the deal selling to Goldman’s clientele shrank from $1.5 billion to $1 billion because of U.S. investors got shut out of the deal, although that’s a clever idea.

I think the discrepancy more likely has to do with the nature of off-the-record scoops, like the one that started the media frenzy in the first place.  Rarely do the early leaks of secrets ever turn out to be accurate. Don’t mistake this as dissing any of the previous coverage of $500 million in direct investment and $1.5 billion from Goldman clientele. Like the release says, Facebook chose to limit the overseas offering to $1 billion, after the bank offered the choice of a range from $375 million to $1.5 billion.

The release consists of one straightforward factual paragraph, a quote from Facebook Chief Financial Officer David Ebersman and then a set of four questions and answers about the deal — all of it appears below, except for the boilerplate at the tail end. The fact that this official statement came out today indicates that the deal has closed. Read on for the release:

Facebook Raises $1.5 Billion

Facebook Receives $1 Billion from Goldman Sachs Overseas Offering; Digital Sky Technologies and Goldman Sachs Also Recently Made $500 Million Direct Investment

Investment Values Facebook at $50 Billion

PALO ALTO, Calif., Jan. 21, 2011 /PRNewswire/ — Facebook today announced it has raised U.S.$1.5 billion at a valuation of approximately $50 billion.

The transaction consisted of two parts. Today, Goldman Sachs completed an oversubscribed offering to its non-U.S. clients in a fund that invested $1 billion in Facebook Class A common stock. In December, Digital Sky Technologies (DST), The Goldman Sachs Group, Inc., and funds managed by Goldman Sachs invested $500 million in Facebook Class A common stock at the same valuation.

“Our business continues to perform well, and we are pleased to be able to bolster our cash position with this new financing,” said David Ebersman, Facebook’s chief financial officer. “With this investment completed, we now have greater financial flexibility to explore whatever opportunities lie ahead.”

The investment generated a significant number of questions from interested parties and Facebook has addressed the most common ones below.

Why did Facebook raise this money?

DST and Goldman Sachs approached Facebook to express their interest in making an investment, and Facebook decided it was an attractive opportunity to bolster its cash reserves and increase its financial flexibility with limited dilution to existing shareholders.

Why did Facebook choose to raise $1 billion in the overseas offering?

Under the transaction’s terms, Facebook had the option to accept between $375 million and $1.5 billion from the Goldman Sachs overseas offering, at the discretion of Facebook. While the offering was oversubscribed, Facebook made a business decision to limit the offering to $1 billion.

What are Facebook’s plans for the proceeds of this transaction?

There are no immediate plans for these funds. Facebook will continue investing to build and expand its operations.

Does this investment mean that Facebook will have more than 500 shareholders?

Even before the investment from Goldman Sachs, Facebook had expected to pass 500 shareholders at some point in 2011, and therefore expects to start filing public financial reports no later than April 30, 2012.

It’s great to see that the social network will indeed begin making financial disclosures to the public by the end of April; and the release doesn’t say anything about whether or when an  initial public offering might happen.

Why do you think the total size of the transaction changed from the originally reported $1.5 billion coming from overseas clients of Goldman Sachs to the currently announced $1 billion?

Break it Down

To help with both the actual writing and to help improve the overall article, I recommend you first make sure you have a great title. Using the keyword or topic that you're targeting, come up with a witty, short title that describes what your article will be about.

After coming up with the title and the general idea of the article, put in some subheads. Depending on how many words you're shooting for, you'll want to use at least two subheads and most probably more. Come up with a good way to further break down the topic of your main article and make these the subheads.

Once you have the subheads in place, you can begin to fill in the "blanks" underneath the subheads with one or more paragraphs of text relating to the subhead. This makes it a lot easier to stick on topic and not end up with one of those articles that read like you're going in circles.

If you don't want to end up with an article that reads like you're going in circles, stick with the tips above!

Bullets are Good

If you're close to your target word count and you still need a little more, throwing in some useful bullet points is rarely a bad idea. Note, though, that I said useful bullet points. Take some time to break down a complex idea into five or more bullet points composed of small phrases or even single words.

Practice Makes Perfect

To become good at writing for the web, you're going to have to practice - a lot. You should already have a blog, but if you don't, start one up and post to it every day. And don't just throw up garbage. Give yourself a goal (say, 500 words) and craft one good story on one good topic. Doing this day after day helps you perfect your craft.

Online Content Marketplace

If you think you're good enough, you can try to sell your content writing services online. There are quite a few different online communities that cater to this type of service provider. There are also other options like Associated Content, which lets you publish your work to a community to see how well it ranks.

Short Term vs Long Term

There's a phrase that says you shouldn't put all your eggs in one basket. This is great advice when applied to many things, even writing content for the web.

If you need cash quickly in the short term, you can sell your already written articles or write articles to order. The rates for this vary greatly online. It's a way to make sure you have some money coming in, though.

While that money is coming in, you can also invest in the long term with your content. Whether it's creating an informational site full of articles about a particular niche or topic or investing in a blog, putting content online can bring you money over time via advertising.

The over time, it should be noted, usually means a very little bit in the beginning then more as the page matures ... if it's a popular page. That's the gamble you take with writing content for yourself, though.

Tip of the Iceberg

These are just some basic thoughts on writing online content for sale and for publishing. One of the great things about the Internet is that not only can you publish to it, or use it to find writing work, you can also use it to learn. If these tips have whet your appetite about making money online with content, go forth and learn more.

foreclosure homes

What happens when 50-million people learn they defrauded by the banks creating illegal loans - defrauded by the courts by allowing the corrupt banks to illegally foreclose a loan no-longer secured by the property - betrayed by their courts & gov who KNEW this was happening and simply looked the other-way while these families are tossed to the street...

As it stands - it is literally impossible for the courts to know if those families were sold legal loans. These families do not yet realize they were lied to & misrepresented by the banks.

The answer, then, is obvious: Because those running the control fraud have no interest in the bank as a going concern -- they are simply looting the institution, running it to maximize their own individual take. NEW YORK — The bleakest year in the foreclosure crisis has only just begun.

Lenders are poised to take back more homes this year than any other since the U.S. housing meltdown began in 2006. About 5 million borrowers are at least two months behind on their mortgages and more will miss payments as they struggle with job losses and loans worth more than their home’s value, industry analysts forecast.

“2011 is going to be the peak,” said Rick Sharga, a senior vice president at foreclosure tracker RealtyTrac Inc. The firm predicts 1.2 million homes will be repossessed this year by lenders.

The outlook comes after banks repossessed more than 1 million homes in 2010, RealtyTrac said Thursday. That marked the highest annual tally of properties lost to foreclosure on records dating back to 2005.

One in 45 U.S. households received a foreclosure filing last year, or a record high of 2.9 million homes. That’s up 1.67 percent from 2009.

For December, 257,747 U.S. homes received at least one foreclosure-related notice. That was the lowest monthly total in 30 months. The number of notices fell 1.8 percent from November and 26.3 percent from December 2009, RealtyTrac said.

The pace slowed in the final two months of 2010 as banks reviewed their foreclosure processes after allegations surfaced in September that evictions were handled improperly. Under increased scrutiny by the government, lenders temporarily halted taking actions against borrowers severely behind on their payments.

However, most banks have since resumed their eviction processes, and the first quarter will likely show a rebound in foreclosure activity, Sharga said.

Foreclosures are expected to remain elevated through the year as homeowners contend with stubbornly high unemployment, tougher credit standards for refinancing and falling home values. Sharga said he expects prices to dip another 5 percent nationally before finally bottoming out. The decline will push more borrowers underwater on their mortgages. Already, about one in five homeowners with a mortgage owe more than their home is worth.

The pain likely will be the most acute in states that have already been hit hard. That includes former housing boom states Nevada, Arizona, Florida and California, along with states that are suffering most from the economic downturn, including Michigan and Illinois.

Nevada posted the highest foreclosure rate in 2010 for the fourth straight year, despite a 5 percent decline in activity from the year before. One in every 11 households received a foreclosure filing last year in the state. In December, foreclosure activity increased 18 percent from November with a 71 percent spike in bank repossessions.

Arizona and California also showed sharp December increases in the number of homes banks took back, at 52 percent and 47 percent, respectively. Arizona, along with Florida, finished the year at No. 2 and No. 3 for the highest foreclosure rates.

One in every 17 Arizona households got a foreclosure filing last year, while one in 18 received a notice in Florida.

California, Utah, Georgia, Michigan, Idaho, Illinois and Colorado rounded out the top ten states with the highest foreclosure rates.

More than half of the country’s foreclosure activity came out of five states in 2010: California, Florida, Arizona, Illinois and Michigan. Together, these states recorded almost 1.5 million households receiving a filing, despite year-over-year decreases in California, Florida and Arizona.

RealtyTrac tracks notices for defaults, scheduled home auctions and home repossessions — warnings that can lead up to a home eventually being lost to foreclosure.

Foreclosure is the new F word. Analysts, armchair quarterbacks, and self-proclaimed experts are blaming everything from lender's greed to the sudden shift in the housing market for the increase of foreclosures. As for the housing market slump, my vote is for the pessimistic media that inflated negative news until their exaggerations helped to create the current situation. Until things settle down, how do homeowners, who are facing foreclosure, deal with their impending doom?

Generally speaking, lenders are not in the business of selling real estate, and they are not anxious to foreclose. Homeowners who are unable to meet a payment are advised to immediately contact their lender. Ignoring the situation, and not sending payments, is not the answer. This is no time to be an ostrich.

Some lenders may be willing to work with the borrower to make alternate payment arrangements, until whatever financial hardship the owner is facing improves. Talking to your lender will not guarantee favorable results for the troubled borrower, but ignoring the situation, and missing payments, is a sure road to foreclosure.

If a balloon payment is due, and goes unpaid, the lender can require the entire loan be paid, and if not done, the property can be put up for sale. It is important to note that lending and foreclosure practices and laws can vary from state to state.

I've talked to real estate agents in our area where some lenders have been extremely cooperative with their borrowers, allowing them to put the house on the market, in an attempt for the homeowner to sell and repay the lender. This allows the borrower to possibly walk away with some equity, providing they are not upside down in their loan. Other lenders are not so cooperative, and refuse to work with customers in default.

There are specific requirements for processing foreclosures, depending on your state. In Arizona a notice of sale must be posted in a local newspaper, as well as posted in a public place. After the notice of sale has been recorded, the borrower has about five days to bring the loan current.

With the increase of foreclosure homes, some buyers are seeing this as an opportunity to get a "really good deal". Yet, some banks refuse to sell foreclosures to investors, and buyers need to be aware that foreclosed homes may have clouds on their titles, which title companies are unable to research, due to the limited time frame between foreclosure and close of escrow. In this case, some title companies may not issue a title insurance policy for the buyer.

As some title companies warn: buyer beware.

Vice President Biden Wipes Away Tears as He Thanks US Troops in Iraq for Service, Sacrifice

January 13, 2011 10:41 AM

ABC News’ Karen Travers reports:

Speaking to US troops at Al Faw Palace in Baghdad today, Vice President Biden grew emotional, wiping tears from his eyes and his face, as he talked about wounded servicemembers and the sacrifices that so many have made.

Describing how he and his wife, Jill, spend Christmas visiting patients at Walter Reed Army Medical Center, Biden wiped a tear away from his eye as he said that he is always struck by the same question that so many wounded veterans ask him.

“Almost without exception the only request that I get is ‘Mr Vice President, can you help me get back to my unit?’” he said.

Biden again wiped his face as he explained how he wished the world could see what he does – “young women and men, not so young sometimes, who don’t ask a thing for all that they’ve done and you wonder how in god’s name can they do this?”

Biden often speaks in very personal terms about the men and women serving in the military – his son Beau spent a year deployed to Iraq with the Delaware Army National Guard's 261st Signal Brigade.

The vice president later apologized for keeping the troops waiting – he was late to deliver the remarks.

He said that he did not plan on getting emotional, but would not apologize for the “intensity” of the feelings that he shares with so many Americans for the sacrifices the men and women of the military are making on behalf of their country.

“We owe you – we owe you more than we can ever repay you,” Biden said. “But the amazing thing to me is how after all that you’ve done, so few of you expect anything, even thanks.”

This was Biden’s seventh trip to Iraq as vice president and he noted that he has been there more than 17 times total. He came to Baghdad this week to meet with Iraqi political leaders in the Green Zone

Biden said earlier this morning that he was in Baghdad to “help the Iraqis celebrate the progress they made.”

“They formed a government. And that's a good thing. They have a long way to go,” he said of the coalition government that came together in December, after nine months of difficult negotiations.

On Tuesday the Institute for Justice went to federal court to find out.

Two years ago IJ teamed up with three Philadelphia tour guides to file a major First Amendment lawsuit seeking to vindicate the freedom to speak in Philadelphia.

Ann Boulais, Mike Tait and Josh Silver sued because officials passed a law making it illegal for anyone like them to give a tour of much of the city’s downtown area without first passing a test and obtaining a government license—that is, getting the government’s permission to speak.

The case immediately sparked nationwide interest.  Robert McNamara, the First Amendment expert who filed the case, appeared on shows like All Things Considered and Marketplace to point out that the Constitution protects our right to communicate for a living, whether we are speaking out as bloggers, journalists, stand-up comedians or tour guides.

The Wall Street Journal ran a front-page feature:

Feeling tyrannized, Ms. [Ann] Boulais and two fellow guides summoned the constitution’s protections by suing the city in Philadelphia Federal court. The history test, they claimed, breached the Bill of Rights — a set of rules, as any good guide should know, that took effect while Congress sat here at 6th and Chestnut streets, on Dec. 15, 1791.

Of course, the guides are quick to point out that officials are violating fundamental American liberties in the very place those liberties were first enshrined in our Constitution.

In 2009, a year after the suit was filed, the city asked a federal judge to dismiss the case.  Their reason?  They had not allocated money in their 2009 budget to enforce the law right away.

Robert McNamara, who also authored a study examining the state of entrepreneurship in Philadelphia, doesn’t find the city’s explanation compelling.  He took the case to the Third Circuit Court of Appeals this week to clarify that Philadelphia’s budget priorities cannot trump the Constitution.  As he says in the above video:

Philadelphia’s tour guides have the right to speak freely without having to worry whether the city is going to start enforcing its licensing requirement in six weeks, six months or a year.   The Institute for Justice is determined to vindicate the First Amendment rights of ordinary Philadelphians to talk to each other about their city and its history.  And to make clear to city officials, in court, that they do not have the power to fine people for unauthorized talking.

Unfortunately, Philadelphia is not alone in its crackdown on tour guides.  Robert filed a similar suit in Washington DC a few months ago.  In the nation’s capital, talking about the Bill of Rights can land you in jail for 90 days.

Robert pointed out in the Washington Post that these tour guide licensing schemes are part of a larger, national problem:

In the past 50 years, there has been an explosion of laws that require people to get a license before they join the workforce. In the 1950s, only about one out of every 20 Americans needed a license to pursue the occupation of their choice. Today, that number is one out of every three.

Thankfully, the U.S. Constitution says that Americans have a right to earn an honest living free from unreasonable regulations.  And protecting this right to economic liberty is one of the founding principles of the Institute for Justice.

Much has been written about the "money-making opportunities" on the internet. Despite the numerous claims that easy riches are just a mouse-click away, most of the sites show you the rainbow, but seem to keep the pot of gold hidden for themselves. That's not to say the opportunities don't exist. There are many opportunities to earn money, whether it's a little extra income, or enough to replace your current job. The trick is to find the right opportunity.

But how?

Do your homework. In legal terms it's called Due Diligence. It refers to doing enough of examination so you know what results to reasonably expect. To help in your due diligence, you should ask the following questions:

1.) Does it sound too good to be true? This should be the first thing you ask. One of the harsh realities of life is that there's no such thing as a free lunch. If it sounds too good to be true, it probably is. Look for unrealistic claims. Can you reasonably expect to make $1,000 a day with only 10-15 hours work a week? If that were true, why would they need to go through all of the trouble to try and recruit you?

2.) Did you learn about this "opportunity" from an unsolicited e-mail? If the answer is yes, run away. Now! No legitimate company is going to spam their opportunity. There are enough ways to get the word out on the internet. If a company is resorting to spam, that's an obvious indication that there are problems.

3.) Do they charge a fee to join, or monthly membership fees? While this is not necessarily a bad thing, it should make you stop and reconsider. Some companies will charge a small up-front fee to help eliminate people that are looking for easy money, and sign up for every opportunity on the net. The thought is, if you invest a little bit of your own money, you will be more motivated to work toward succeeding. However, you should be very wary of companies that charge a large fee to join, and charge monthly "membership" fees. These companies are making profit off of every thing you sell and every person you recruit. Monthly fees are just another way for them to make more money off of you (that's money out of your pocket).

4.) Is there clear contact information? Look at their website. You should be able to find contact information without too much effort. Make sure there is a name, address, phone number, and email address. If the business is legitimate, there is no reason for them to hide or deny you this information.

5.) Do they respond to requests? This is a simple test. Call or email them with a question (just make something up). Do they respond promptly?

6.) Do they show up on the "Scam report" websites? Are they discussed in forums? This is anther crucial part of the homework process. However, you shouldn't necessarily believe everything you read. Many people post to forums with their own agenda. They may be trying to steer you away from one company and toward one that they are associated with. Take what you read with a grain of salt, but it may lead you toward more questions that you should be asking.

7.) Are they listed by the Better Business Bureau? If they have a BBB logo on their site, check to make sure they are actually a member.

8.) Look for the Terms of Service. Read and understand what's written. I know it can be confusing trying to wade through all of the "legalize", but this is where they tell you what to expect.

9.) Do you make money from selling a product, or from signing up more members? What are they paying you for? If they have a product to sell, they will give you an indication of what that is without making you sign up first. The more mysterious and secretive they are, the more you should beware. Avoid companies that spend all their efforts telling you how much you can make by recruiting others. That sounds more like a Ponzi scheme than a legitimate business.

10.) How long have they been around? Again, this isn't the determining factor, but if the company has been in business for a while, it's a strong indication that they have a legitimate business model

There are many legitimate opportunities on the web, and there are many more more scams. Before you leap at a new opportunity do you homework. It's worth the time and effort.
